Evelyn Irwin Obituary

            Evelyn W. Irwin, Age 101 of Concordia, KS passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at her home.

            She was born October 9, 1917 on the family farm in Ames, KS to Will and Laura Quinnett Longton. 

            Evelyn was baptized at St. John’s Catholic Church in Clyde, KS and was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Catholic Church in Concordia, KS, as well as the Women of the Moose.

            During World War II Evelyn worked at the Concordia POW Camp Commissary.  She then made a bold move to Portland, Oregon and with the country in war worked sometimes through an entire night for McCormick Steamship Company auditing cargo/supplies being sent to Russia. Later she worked for Hunt Foods at Knoxberry Farm in Anaheim, CA.

            Survivors include her niece, Pamela Rae Longton Larson and nephew Dean of Liberty, MO; nephew, Anthony “Tony” Bambenek, Fountain City, WI; great nephews, Dean “Trace” Larson, III (Kristen) Liberty, MO; Eric Larson (Dr. Emily) Kansas City, MO; great niece, Erin Larson, Smithville, great nephew, Rev. Dr. Roger Bambenek, Chaplain, Palm Springs, CA; great nieces, Susan (Gerald) Suhr, Fountain City, WI; Laurie (Rick) Krause, Trempealeau, WI, Antoinette (Randal) Drier, Fountain City, WI; Jacqueline Bambenek, Palm Springs, CA and many great great as well as great great great nieces and nephews.

            She was preceded in death by her husband Carl “Bud” Daniel Irwin, her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Goldie Longton; niece, Barbara Joan Longton Bambenek; great nieces, Karen Bambenek Andresen and Mary Bambenek, great nephew, Raymond Bambenek.

            Evelyn began painting with water colors later in life in 1977.  She enjoyed painting many different subjects such as birds, elk, deer, flowers, chickens and windmills.  She continuously displayed her works thru the years at the Concordia Senior Citizens Center.  People have also viewed her work at Frank Carlson Library, St. Joseph Hospital and Concordia City Park. 

            Fishing was a fun hobby for her and she enjoyed dancing, playing pitch, pool and spending time with her family and friends.

            Visitation will be Friday May 31, 2019 from 2pm thru 7pm with family receiving guests from 5pm thru 7pm at Nutter Mortuary Chapel.

            In gratitude the family would like to thank the compassionate staff of Autumn Seifert, RN, owner of No Place Like Home, Clyde, KS, and Caregivers Lynsey Garrett and Sidney Garrett, Concordia, KS, as well as Meadowlark Hospice, Clay Center, KS who supported our family and provided Evelyn’s end of life care.

            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Nutter Mortuary Chapel, Concordia, KS with her great nephew, Rev. Dr. Roger Lee Bambenek, Chaplain officiating.

            In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Meadowlark Hospice, Clay Center, KS or Concordia Senior Citizens Center.
