Dennis Holt Obituary

Dennis William Holt was born in Indiana, May 31, 1938 To Josephine Herschleib. His Biological father was never in his life. When Dennis was 3 ½ years old his mother put him in an orphanage. He lived there until he was 5 years old. A that point his mother picked him up. His Mother married a man and the 3 of them traveled and settled in a suburb of Los Angeles.

Dennis had a traumatic childhood. His step-father was quite abusive; his mother did not protect him. At age 17, He joined the navy to get away from his bad home life. For a while, he was stationed just outside of London, England. Then he was transferred to the USS Franklin D . Roosevelt- an Aircraft Carrier. His job was to photograph the take-offs and landings of all aircraft on the ship. He developed some good friendships there. He liked his position and was quite proficient.

After his discharge, he chose to live on his own, rather than return to his parents’ home. For a while he worked in retail which was clearly not for him! He started taking flying lessons and found that this was something he truly loved. He got his small aircraft pilots license. The woman that Dennis was dating didn’t like the fact that he was spending so much time in airports, so he stopped flying. Dennis married Linda White. They had 3 daughters, Laurie, Heidi, and Kristy. After a 15 year marriage, Dennis and Linda divorced.

Dennis worked as a commercial truck driver. This job ultimately created some severe back problems. When Dennis married Wendy Wood in 1988, They settled in Riverside, California. They lived there for 16 years. They then moved to Concordia, Kansas, where Dennis had several more back surgeries.

Dennis health continued o worsen over time. He had multiple health problems. In December of 2018, Dennis broke his right ankle. Because of his poor health, the break could not be mended. His right leg had to be amputated above his right knee. That was truly the start of his decline. Since December of 2018, he had been in either hospitals or nursing homes.

Dennis passed away on Friday, June 26, 2020. Dennis had been a son, a father, a grandfather and a great grandfather. While living in Kansas, he had become an amateur astronomer and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Concordia and a husband to Wendy for 32 ½ years. He died at the age of 82 years old at Minneapolis Heath and Rehab Center.
