Charles Bennett Johnson

Charles Bennett Johnson was born on September 21, 1936 and died on August 13, 2026 at age of 89. Charles was the son of Mervin Bennett Johnson and Martha Louise (Pettyjohn) Johnson.

Charles Bennett Johnson married Marcia Ann Koehn on July 13, 1958. Born to this union were Jacqueline Sue “Jackie” (Johnson) Wilson, July 9, 1959; Katherine Louise “Kathy” (Johnson) Snyder-Tiffany, January 10, 1061; Stephanie Ann (Johnson) Wilkinson, March 17, 1965.

Charles showed a great interest in school early, he followed his sister to school (1/2 mile) one morning on his tricycle, causing his mom to have to follow him later and pick him up. He took train to Concordia on Monday’s for high school, spending the week at the Walkers, returning home on Fridays on the train. Charles graduated from Concordia High School in Concordia Kansas. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1959 with a degree in Agriculture Engineering. His intelligence earned him membership in Sigma Tau, Steel Ring, Phi Kappa Phi. He was also ASAE President, a member of the Engineering Council, and won a Student Honor Award.

He farmed in Republic County with his dad for many years, making many innovations to improve production. He was active in the community, served on the school board for Belleville schools for many years. He supported his children in participating in many school activities as well as 4-H. He served on the Republic County Board of Commissioners. As a member of the American Agriculture Movement he participated in the 1979 tractorcade to Washington DC to bring awareness of the worsening farm crisis. He returned to school at Kansas State University for a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics. He then worked at South Dakota State, eventually moving on to Mensch Engineering in Fairmont Minnesota. He retired and returned to Concordia Kansas in the early 2000’s. He served his community on the Concordia City Commission from 2006 through 2015. Charles was an active member of the Optimist Club in Concordia, helping with many charitable activities.

Charles was an avid collector of toy tractors (except John Deere) and other cast iron farm implements. His favorite book was “Twas the Night before Christmas”, which he could still recite from memory. He had an extensive collection of different printings of the poem as well. He collected rodeo belt buckles from the national rodeo finals. He spent countless hours playing many different card games with family and friends.

Charles is survived by his sister Reye Royse, Parsons, KS, daughter Jackie of Denton, Texas, granddaughter Sierra Snyder of Salina Kansas, great grandson Elijah (Korina) Noojin, grandson Drew Wilson New York City, New York, granddaughter Kim Quirk and husband Kyle, great granddaughters Adeline Rey and Lylah Jean of Denton, Texas, grandson Brendan Hardaway and partner Allie, great grandsons Dean Ivan and Jason Charles, granddaughter Tori Wilkinson of Kansas City Kansas.

Memorial services will be held Saturday September 19, 2026 at Nutter Mortuary at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Concordia Optimist Club.
