John Edwards Obituary

John Howard Edwards, 92 of Jewell joined the choir of angels on June 21st at the Mitchell County Residential Care Center in Beloit, KS. John was born on July 22nd, 1925 in Jewell County, the youngest of four boys born to Howard and Nellie Edwards. His brothers, William, Richard and Robert served in WWII, Robert gave his life for his nation in the Philippines. John remained to help with the farm. John graduated from Jewell High School, class of 1943. He married Rosalie Faye Buer of Norway, KS on February 5th, 1951, just before reporting to the US Army. He served his enlistment at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Upon completion of his obligation to his country, he brought his young family back to Jewell County. In 1955, he bought a house adjacent to the farm that had been in the family since just after the Civil War. He began to farm the family ground, which he would do the remainder of his life. He was a proud member of the American Legion and Jewell County Mason’s Lodge, Number 11 for more than 60 years. He was a faithful and active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Jewell, where he served on the board of directors, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. His singing voice was so beloved that it was said that you couldn’t be buried a Methodist in Jewell, if John Edwards didn’t sing at your funeral. He was passionate about music – especially the Big Band era of jazz. His house was often filled with the sounds of Miller, Basie, Dorsey or Ellington. He loved all animals, particularly his cats, who gave him great company and comfort after the loss of Rosalie. John was preceded in death by his brothers and his beloved wife of 66 years, Rosalie. He leaves his children and grandchildren, Ginna (Virginia), her husband Romulus Lee of Langley, WA and daughter Maia Lee of Montclair, NJ, Dick and his wife Carlene Edwards of Jamestown, KS, Cheryl and her husband, Duane Daugherty of Roeland Park, KS and their daughters and sons-in-law, Lauren (Craig) Hulse of Denver, CO and Morgan (Tyler) Whisenhunt of Kansas City, MO, and David and his wife Judy Edwards of Concordia, KS and their sons, Keenan Edwards of Concordia, KS and Brenton Edwards of Manhattan, KS. John loved his friends, his community, his church family, but most of all he treasured the time spent with his children and grandchildren. Service will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 30th at Trinity United Methodist Church in Jewell with Pastor Jim Rice officiating, and lunch to follow. Visitation hours will be Friday June 29th from 2:00PM to 7:00PM with the family receiving friends from 6:00-7:00PM at Kleppinger Funeral Home in Jewell.  Interment at the Wallace Cemetery with a celebration of John’s life at the Jewell Community Center will be held on August 11th.
