Devine Montoya Obituary

Devine S. Montoya, 92, of Concordia, KS passed away on March 11, 2024 at the Regent Retirement Home in Wichita, KS.  Devine was born in Hooker, OK on January 14, 1932 to Andy Montoya and Lucynda Sanchez.

Devine graduated high school in 1951 from Hooker High School.  He went on to attend Panhandle Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1955 with a degree in Education.  Devine’s first teaching job was in Quenemo, KS where he lead the boys basketball team to a state championship in 1960.  He came to Concordia, KS in 1963 where he was employed as the principal at Jamestown, KS before going to U.S.D. 333 until his retirement in 1992.  During his tenure with the school district he wore many hats including Spanish Teacher, Driver’s Education Instructor, Librarian, Keyboard Teacher, Tennis Coach and Guidance Counselor to name just a few of his many roles.

Devine enjoyed his retirement traveling the world with his wife and family.  He loved spending his winters in Arizona golfing and playing tennis.  He never passed up an opportunity for a happy hour or a night on the town.  Devine was an avid collector of anything collectible whether it was spoons accumulated during one of his many vacations or barbed wire that just looked too good to pass up.  His favorite collection was his John Wayne collection where he had everything John Wayne from plates to DVD’s.  He was a very active member of the community supporting the arts as well as High School and College Booster Clubs.  Devine was an active member of the Concordia Lion’s Club, Masonic Lodge and Isis Shrine.  He was also a member of the former Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, Concordia.
