Sister Francis Otter Obituary

Sister Francis Margaret Otter died  March 3, 2018, at Mt. Joseph Senior Village  in Concordia, KS.  She was  85 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for  67  years.  She was born in Clayton, KS on July 22, 1932, to Frank and Margaret Bates Otter, the second of eight children, and was baptized Virginia Ann.  She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, KS on February 1, 1951.  On August 15, 1951, Virginia received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Francis Margaret.  She pronounced first vows on August 15, 1952 and final vows on August 15, 1955.

Sister Francis Margaret received a BA in Social Science from Marymount College, Salina, KS in 1965.  She began her 43 year teaching career in schools staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Chicago, IL, Concordia, Manhattan, Leawood, Junction City, Herndon, Salina, Oakley, Plainville, KS and El Paso, TX.  In 2005 Sister Francis Margaret retired to the Motherhouse; followed by a move to Mt. Joseph Senior Village in April 2016.

Sister Francis Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother.  She is survived by two sisters, one of whom is also Sisters of St. Joseph – Sister Donna of El Paso, Texas – and JoAnn Long of New Almelo, KS; and two brothers, Alvin of Wichita, KS and Marion of New Almelo, KS.  A Bible Vigil Service will be held  March 5  at 11:00 a.m. in the Nazareth Motherhouse Chapel with Sister Jean Rosemarynoski as the eulogist.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be  March 5  at 2:00 p.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel, Father  Dan Scheetz presiding.  The burial will be in the Nazareth Motherhouse Cemetery.  Nutter Mortuary, 116 E. 6th St., Concordia, KS is in charge of arrangements.  Memorials for Sister Francis Margaret Otter may be given to the Sisters of St. Joseph Health Care/Retirement Fund or the Apostolic Works of the Sisters; P.O Box 279, Concordia, KS  66901.
